A plan to improve a portion of downtown Wood River is moving along, with a public meeting scheduled for June 18 at 5:30pm. That is right before the next city council meeting. The city was approved for a $500,000 grant through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program in December 2009 that will result in a redesigned Ferguson Avenue area that is expected to include new crosswalks, sidewalks, street lighting and curb bump outs.
Phase 1 will include Ferguson Avenue from Wood River Avenue to 2nd Street. Public Services Director Steve Palen says it is a highly anticipated project.
Changing the visual impact of the area to attract more shoppers and businesses is the ultimate goal.
