When the Federal Emergency Management Agency finalizes its new floodplain maps, the Wood River Public Services Director hopes they will look a lot different that what is currently being proposed.  The process of drawing new maps began in 2008 at the time the massive levee upgrade and re-certification process began.  Several preliminary map proposals have already been thrown out.

Steve Palen tells The Big Z the final maps are supposed to take into consideration comments from citizens and the municipalities impacted.

About 90 - 95 of those properties are in the 6th street area, and the bulk of the rest are in the Avalon area behind the Pump House.  Palen says they are organizing with other communities in Madison County to try and get more voices together to oppose FEMA's current plan.
