An Alton woman was found dead inside a burning home early Wednesday, and authorities believe the woman's death was a suicide. The 43 year old victim was found hanging in the basement of the residence by firefighters who were searching the home for occupants. Investigators say while a flammable liquid was found spread at the scene, the victim took her own life by hanging, and no criminal activity is suspected.
Firefighters were called just before 2:00am Wednesday to the home in the 1900 block of Orchard Bouelvard, and made forced entry into the home to search for anyone inside. Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold:
Sebold says the fire started at the garage and had spread to part of the home by the time fire crews arrived. Two young children who normally live at the residence were not home and were with their father at the time of the fire. It is the policy of Z-1570 News to not report the names of victims of suicide.
