The Madison County States Attorney filed charges yesterday against a Maryville man after he allegedly struck and killed a woman, also injuring her three children, walking along the side of the interstate Thursday night. 39-year-old Steven L. Willis is being charged with one count of Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence Causing death (which is a Class 2 Felony) and one count of Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence (a Class 4 Felony). Willis struck and killed 27-year-old Samantha S. Miller after she pulled to the side of the Northbound Interstate 55 because her car broke down. He also struck Miller's car with her three children inside, all of whom suffered injuries. Her 3-year-old son suffered the worst injuries with a skull fracture. The other two children, a girl 6, and a boy, 8, also suffered injuries. All three children are being treated at area hospitals. The maximum penalty for a Class 2 Felony is 3-7 years in prison and the maximum for a Class 4 is 1-3 years in prison. Willis is currently being held at the Madison County Jail. His bond is set at $200,000.
