A Godfrey woman was sentenced to prison for failing to care for her mother. 48 year old Marjorie “Marjie” Phillips of the 4700 block of Storeyland Drive, was sentenced to five and a half years in jail for allowing her mother to live, and eventually die, in what authorities called an “utterly deplorable” state.
71 year old Marjorie “Bev” Phillips, who lived at the same address, was found dead in the home on January 1 of this year and her daughter was charged two days later. Investigators at the time said the home was covered in trash and household items and the space where the victim lived was in the basement where the conditions were similar. An autopsy disclosed bedsores on the victim and the cause of death was ruled a homicide. Phillips pleaded guilty to criminal neglect of an elderly person in exchange for other charges being dropped. She must serve at least half her sentence and will be credited with time served in the Madison County Jail.
