An Alton woman will spend three years in jail and will have to pay back money she stole from an elderly couple from Bethalto. 47 year old Kayla Mueller has been sentenced in Madison County Court for bank fraud for taking advantage of a couple she was supposed to be caring for in her job through a home health care business. Mueller will have 20 years to pay back around $228,000.
Authorities were notified of a possible financial problem in 2010 by the daughter of the female victim after she found a withdrawal receipt for $10,000 from her mother's account after the 88 year old woman passed away. Bethalto Police and the FBI began an investigation and found Mueller was withdrawing money with a debit card she obtained on the male victims account, as well as on the deceased woman. Much of the money she was stealing was reportedly being used to feed a gambling habit. The husband in the case suffered from Alzheimer's and told his step-daughter he knew nothing about the banking problems. Mueller worked for Morning Star Home Health Care at the time and was assisting the couple who resided in at apartment at Villa Rose Senior Living Community.
