A fire Monday morning claimed one life, while another person was able to escape the burning home in the 1600 block of Courtney Drive in Granite City.   The Madison County Coroner’s Office says 60-year-old Debra Condor died at the scene of the fire that burned her home.

Long Lake Fire Department out of Pontoon Beach and the Mitchell Fire Department responded to the blaze which was called in around 8:15am Monday.  A bystander attempted to assist in the rescue efforts and suffered minor burns, while another woman inside the home was able to escape.  Authorities believe Condor may have been unable to flee the building due to chronic health issues.  Her preliminary cause of death appears to be smoke inhalation.  The Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s office are investigating the cause of the blaze.
