An Alton woman was killed Thursday afternoon after the car she was riding in was hit from behind by another vehicle.   65 year old Nell Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene after witnesses were able to pull her from the wreckage before first responders arrived on the scene.  No one else involved was seriously injured in the crash that took place on Highway 143 just west of Illinois 255.

Illinois State Police report the accident took place just after 1:30pm on Thursday when a Honda Accord driven by 65 year old Carol Garrett of Alton was rear ended by a GMC Yukon driven by 28 year old Phillip Cain of Bethalto.  Police say it appears Garrett's vehicle had been stopped at the traffic signal, but are not yet sure if she was moving before she was struck by Cain's vehicle.  Both drivers were taken to Alton Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released.  The accident remains under investigation.
