An Alton woman is jailed on numerous felonies after allegedly attacking a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon. 31-year-old Marquita A. Darris of the 600 block of Sheppard Street is charged with felony Aggravated Battery of a Peace Officer, Disarming a Peace Officer, and Resisting a Peace Officer. She is also charged with the following misdemeanors: Obstructing Identification, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Resisting a Peace Officer, Unlawful Possession of less than 2.5 grams of Cannabis.
There are also traffic violations of Driving while License Suspended, No Insurance and Disobeying a Stop Sign. It was the traffic violation that led to the stop at the intersection of Deanna Street and Stanley Road in Cottage Hills. After she allegedly gave the deputy false information about who she was, Darris allegedly got into a scuffle with the officer, grabbed his Taser and began tasing him with it. Two bystanders tried to intervene, but were told to withdraw by the deputy. He eventually grabbed his gun and ordered Darris to drop the Taser. She did, and was eventually secured without further incident. A passenger in the car, 25-year-old Michelle L. Corrigan of the 1400 block of 6th Street in Cottage Hills was arrested and charged with felony Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine, and misdemeanor Unlawful Possession of Cannabis.
