December is here. That often means dry, flaky and itchy skin… but it doesn’t have to. With the cold winds of winter also come dry conditions, which over time can damage skin. Dermatologist Becky Larson at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield says skin conditions shouldn’t be ignored.
“You can develop dry skin, which can become dermatitis,” she says. “You can get some breakdown of that skin barrier, which can then become susceptible to infections.”

Larson says inexpensive, oil-based lotion applied several times daily will keep skin in top shape. It’s best applied after bathing to lock in moisture. Also, Larson suggests boiling water on the stove so you don’t have to buy a humidifier.
