They’re pests, and they carry diseases. Feral swine – “wild hogs” – are on the loose in Illinois, chiefly in the southeastern part of the state but also in Knox and Fulton Counties. Stacey Solano, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture, says they are scattered throughout the state, too.

The state, working with the USDA, wants hunters to be aware of the pigs’ presence. With a landowner’s permission, anyone with a firearm owners’ ID card can shoot the pigs. At the very least, Solano says, report them.  “They can destroy turkey habitats,” Solano says, in addition to the other havoc they can wreak upon the state’s crops and other animals.  DNR Division of Wildlife Resources (217) 785-2511
