There is a new wetlands area open to the public in Madison County. The Arlington Wetlands is a unique 83-acre tract of wetland in Pontoon Beach. The main body of water is a 'remnant oxbow,' which is a small, curved lake that was at one time part of the Mississippi River. The site was officially dedicated Thursday in a morning ceremony.
Madison County Sustainability Coordinator Leah Dettmers says one of the unique characteristics of the Wetlands is a floating boardwalk across open water that allows visitors access to areas that otherwise could not be explored.
Experts say the Arlington Wetlands also serves an important role in providing stormwater storage and clean water, in addition to serving as a protected habitat for wildlife. It is located at 84 Arlington Drive near the Arlington Greens Golf Course.
