Western boasted a competitive football team as well.  In 1904 Western began a football competition with Alton High School. The annual Thanksgiving Day game, pitting the cadets against the public school team, became "the biggest event on the Alton sports calendar", according to some historians.  The rivalry was discontinued in 1952.  The dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday May 25 at 10am inside the school gymnasium.
