The first traces of West Nile Virus this year are already popping up in Illinois. A bird and several batches of mosquitoes in Cook and DuPage counties have tested positive for the virus, a little earlier than usual in Illinois.

Melaney Arnold with the State Department of Public Health says it’s hard to say if this means West Nile will be a bigger threat this year.

Arnold comments

The virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito, so Arnold says it’s important to wear insect repellant, especially if you are outside at dawn or dusk.
