We're heading into West Nile Virus season. More than 500 people in Illinois have contracted the virus over the past five years, and 30 have died. Melaney Arnold with the state's Department of Public Health says there are ways to reduce the risk of getting infected.

People should also be sure to wear insect repellent with Deet when they're outside during the summer months. Birds can carry the virus, so if you see a dead bird, be sure to call the local health department and report it so they can come pick it up.
