A water main break along a busy Alton road had street crews salting the pavement this morning as water crews got to work on fixing the break. The infrastructure failure near the intersection of Alby and Brentwood Streets was reported to Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart just before 8am, and he immediately sent crews to the area to respond to the situation.
Barnhart says the weather extremes likely played a role in the break.

He says the water has run south from the break along the west side of the road, but there has been some ice buildup. As far as an estimated timeframe on repairs or any boil orders, that would be in the hands of Illinois American Water. A company spokesman referred to the break as a small one, and no one is without water.
