Should local phone companies be required to provide residential landline service? They have to now to customers who want it, but next year they'll be asking lawmakers to relieve them of the “obligation to serve.” This is a bad idea, according to representatives with the Citizens Utility Board.
CUB and the AARP are teaming up in Illinois to fight that possibility. Jim Chilsen of the Citizens Utility Board says they are launching a website explaining the issue.

People who live in rural areas with spotty cell phone coverage could be affected, with their landline service made either unavailable or the price going up.
