With the days getting shorter heading toward winter, it is completely dark for many on the drive home, and a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Insurance wants drivers to pay extra attention to their surroundings as the dark takes up more of our drive time. The reduction in daylight can present special challenges, including the ability to spot a deer dashing toward the roadway.
There are more deer to deal with right now, as they are in the rut - or mating season. Week two of the firearm season is also coming up. Mark Terry references a recent report from the Insurance Information Institute.
He says avoid swerving to miss the deer, as you can wind up rolling the vehicle if you jerk the wheel, or get into a head-on crash by entering an oncoming lane of traffic.
