The Social Security Administration is joining the call to watch out for scams in the new year. Common scams in 2015 involved people being called or emailed claiming they owned money to the IRS or other federal agency. A spokesman for the Alton office says Social Security won’t typically call you looking for information.

Hazelwood says to never give out personal information to anyone calling you out of the blue and if you believe someone is trying to scam you over the phone, hang up and call police. For more information about Social Security, go to www.socialsecurity.gov
