Scammers keep finding new ways to trick consumers into sending them thousands of dollars. Popular among the crooks in recent months are bogus government grant offers of "free" money for college costs, home repairs, or even family vacations, which the Better Business Bureau reports has resulted in victims sending the scammers thousands of dollars.
Better Business Bureau investigator Bill Smith tells The Big Z the scammer tells the victim they could get a lot of money from the money, if they pay a small processing fee.

Smith says if a caller claims to represent law enforcement or a government agency, get the person’s name and affiliation and tell them you will call back. Look up the phone number for the agency and use that number to contact authorities. The agency will be able to tell you if the call is legitimate.
