If a contractor offers to fix your house after a major storm and save you the cost of the deductible, the Better Business Bureau wants you to know the company is breaking the law. While you likely would not face criminal charges unless you conspired to commit the insurance fraud, the BBB suggests you part ways with the contractor as soon as they make that offer.
Investigator Bill Smith says this is a practice that is usually more prevalent after a big storm, such as the ones we experienced earlier in the spring.
Smith says some were unaware of the fact, and stopped immediately, while others did not. He understands the offer can be a tempting one, especially when money is tight, but says it also raises questions about the ethical status of the contractors, if they are willing to break the law. He adds some of the contractors advertising the service were actually scammers.
