You can’t be too safe, say the people who want to take polling places out of Illinois schools.  While there’s no Election Day incident similar to Sandy Hook or Columbine, “Schools are sanctuaries for our children, and they are supposed to be, by design, a safe place,” says State Rep. Jack Franks (D-Marengo).

Allowing the general public in to cast votes “opens up a chance for taking away that safety, and our kids have to be safe every day, including Election Day.”  Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, hosting a news conference with lawmakers and police, says county clerks and election authorities should be able to find alternative sites which are accessible and have adequate parking.
