A volunteer organization that has been in Alton for 65-years may be forced to close its doors later this year if they don't see a rise in membership or donations.The Alton Volunteer Emergency Corps has seen its membership drop from as many as 20 a few years ago to just seven people today. Organizers say they will have to make decisions over the next several months that could include closing thier offices at 2400 Bloomer Drive in Alton.

AVEC is a not-for-profit organization that was formed in 1948 and assists law enforcement agencies and the public with water and ground searches, water recovery and rescue, natural disaster aid and additional security and other types of assistance at local events.

If you are interested in volunteering there are a few criteria you will have to meet. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license and clean background with no felony convictions. For more information contact Commander Ed Drach at (618) 530-5865.
