A South Roxana Police officer escaped injury after his patrol car was struck by a suspect’s vehicle, who had bailed out of the truck following a pursuit. The officer was trying to stop 42 year old Charles Higgins Monday night following the complaint of property damage in Wood River and pursued Higgins from South Roxana to Alton.
South Roxana Police Officer Lee Brousseau responded to the report of a reckless driving complaint at Midwest Bio Diesel in South Roxana just after 10pm Monday and spotted a vehicle matching a description. Police say the vehicle also matched a description of one that had caused property damage in Wood River. The pursuit of Higgins ended in Alton, near the Rock Quarry, where Higgins reportedly bailed out of his vehicle, which then struck Officer Brousseau’s patrol car. The officer was able to take Higgins into custody in a wooded area following a brief foot pursuit. Higgins is charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding and he is being held in the Madison County Jail.
