The USO of Illinois has arranged for bicycles to be given the children of a unit that’s in Afghanistan.   The unit is the Springfield-based BEST A-11. The unit’s members have 18 kids. Eighteen bicycles were donated by Wirtz Beverage Illinois, a liquor distributorship, and assembled by Wirtz employees Friday afternoon at their warehouse in Cicero.

The bikes will be distributed next month. “Once they’re assembled, we with USO will collect them up, put ‘em in our van, and then we’re gonna store them until May 18. May 18 … the families of the unit are having a family function in Bloomington, and at that time we’re gonna drive the bikes down there as well as some Wirtz employees are gonna be there to help distribute them during the family event,” said Wiley Nordon, program director for the USO of Illinois.   Several dozen Wirtz employees, many in office attire, spend the afternoon in teams surrounding the 18 bicycles – each age and size appropriate for the recipient – studying instructions to assemble the bicycles properly.

The effort is part of the Month of the Military Child.
