As the United States Postal Service continues its search for a new building, a representative of the USPS provided the Alton City Council with an update on Wednesday. In about a year the Post Office will have to move from its home on Belle Street, as the ground is contaminated and Ameren Illinois, which owns the land, will begin a clean up that involves razing the building.
The Postal Service’s Marla Larsen-Williams says they are looking for a fairly large piece of property.

The land the building sits on was once used by Alton Gas & Electric, which built its gas plant in 1855. Through the course of several decades and other tenants, the ground became contaminated with coal and tar residue contamination.
