University of Illinois President Michael Hogan resigned Thursday. Hogan will stay until July 1, when longtime faculty member Bob Easter will become the university’s 19th president. Hundreds of faculty members signed a petition calling for the ouster of Hogan. State Rep. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) says the board should have hired Easter in 2010 instead of Hogan.

“Bob Easter is the only guy who can put Humpty Dumpty back together again,” Rose said. Easter has been with the university for 36 years. Rose says he disagrees with some of Hogan’s policies, such as centralizing the three U. of I. campuses. “And then starting to step on some campus-specific issues and starting to place Chicago, Springfield and Champaign all in the same footing. I think there’s definite issues,” Rose says.
