Two workers at Amsted Rail in Granite City remain in critical condition at a hospital in St. Louis County following a blast at the facility on Thursday morning. The explosion is believed to be gas related, according to Granite City Fire officials who are among those investigating. More than a half dozen other workers suffered less serious injuries and were treated at a hospital in Granite City.
Fire crews were called out around 8:15am Thursday following the blast. Assistant Granite City Fire Chief Jim Snelson says gas was involved in yesterday's explosion but it's not known what caused it. Two employees, Reginald Golliday and Danny Wilson, were listed in critical condition in the burn unit of Mercy Hospital St. Louis. A third person was reportedly air-transported from Granite City to a hospital in St. Louis, but that person's condition is unknown. Snelson says OSHA is also assisting in the investigation. Amsted Rail manufactures rail-car parts.
