The sheriff in Madison County has been defeated by his former "right-hand man."  Long-time Sheriff Bob Hertz was running for a fourth term against John Lakin for the Democratic nomination.  Lakin handily beat Hertz 7929 – 4401.

Lakin left his job as a major with the sheriff's department three years ago to work as police chief in Glen Carbon, but says he has always wanted to be the county’s top cop.

In another primary race for Sheriff, this time in Jersey County, Ray Sinclair beat Terry Day for the Republican nomination 779-734.  Sinclair moves on to face current Sheriff Mark Kallal in the fall.  In Macoupin County, Incumbent Don Albrecht lost to challenger Shawn Kahl 4,508-2,081.
