Granite City Police are investigating an explosion that killed two workers on Monday at a local recycling plant. Police Chief Rich Miller says a mortar shell exploded at the Totall Metal Recycling plant in the 2700 block of Missouri Avenue just before 8am yesterday.
It was unclear where the mortar shell came from or whether anyone at the business knew it was live. The men that were killed are identified as 46-year-old Rodolfo Romo of Fairmont City and 24-year-old Tyler Muenstermann of Edwardsville. A third person was injured and taken to a St. Louis hospital. The business remains closed as bomb squads from Scott Air Force Base and the Illinois Secretary of State will remove more potentially dangerous materials today.
