The Illinois secretary of state is warning undocumented immigrants applying for a driver’s license not to fall for scams. Those looking to get the state’s new Temporary Visitors Driver License could begin scheduling appointments this week, though facilities won’t begin seeing applicants until next month. But Secretary of State Jesse White says scam artists are promising they can get those appointments moved up in exchange for cash.

“Some individuals are trying to rip off those undocumented by saying ‘We can get you to the head of the line, we can get you an appointment, or we’ll help you in the testing process, here’s the answers to the test.’ None of those things can take place,” White said.
White says other scammers have been soliciting up to $1,000 for so-called “universal licenses” that will be recognized in other states. No such license exists, as the TVDLs will be recognized in Illinois only for driving purposes, not for identification.
