When it comes to cooking fires on Thanksgiving, Illinois is a leading contender.  This is according to State Farm Insurance, which finds Illinois in second place for cooking fires on Thanksgiving over the last six years, with 24. Texas leads with 32.

The cause, says Missy Lundberg of State Farm, tends to be turkey fryers, with which the users have little experience, and if the boiling oil over the flame spills and catches fire, it can spread quickly. Her advice: Read, understand and follow the instructions.  Deep fryer fires cause $15 million in property damage nationally each year, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.
