As the middle of June draws near, layoffs in Alton remain on the table.  The city has to submit a budget by the end of the month, and numerous factors are coming together to make the talk of layoffs more than just a possibility.

Alton Mayor Brant Walker tells The Big Z he has continued to meet with the various collective bargaining units representing city workers.

The Committee of the Whole approved a move to combine the work of two people into one job – that of Street Maintenance-Operations Supervisor.  Both of the men doing that job are getting ready to retire.  Walker says that could save the city somewhere around $70,000 per year.
