The annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Lincoln Douglas Square takes place tonight in downtown Alton. Festivities begin at 6pm with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus and then the tree lighting around 6:45pm. All activities at the square this evening are free.
Alton Main Street Executive Director Sara McGibany says girls scouts will sing carols, the Salvation Army will offer free cookies and hot cocoa and kick off their Tree of Lights-Red Kettle Campaign, and there will be blessing of the tree. She says if you come down, you can help out those in need:

Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club donated the tree 21 years ago for the event and members will also be on hand. Alton Mayor Brant Walker and children in attendance will help light the tree around 6:45pm There will be a free trolley running between the square and the Riverbender.com Community Center from 5:30 to 7:30pm and the center will hold its free open house until 10pm.
