The annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting takes place this evening in downtown Alton. Festivities at Lincoln Douglas Square get underway at 6pm with the arrival of Santa by trolley. There will be hot chocolate and cookies provided to those who attend, and then shortly after 6:30, the tree will be lit.
The Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club purchased the tree several years ago and is in charge of putting it up and taking it down each year. Alton Main Street Executive Director Sara McGibany says if you attend, give yourself time to visit downtown Alton after the tree lighting:

Along with the tree lighting, the Alton Salvation Army will kick off its holiday season fundraising efforts during the event tonight.
