Another round of construction for high speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis is set to start Monday. That means some passengers on Amtrak trains will be shifted onto charter buses for portions of the ride. The construction is in Alton this time around, so those traveling between St. Louis and Springfield will be on buses for the first phase.
Some southbound passengers should be prepared to add extra travel time to their itineraries. Passengers can get detailed information on the "Service Alerts and Notices" link at the Amtrak website. Amtrak did the same thing last summer while crews worked on rails and that caused a slight dip in ridership. But this time around, Spokesperson Marc Magliari says they're prepared to add more buses. Despite the drop, Amtrak is seeing record growth on its Illinois routes, with nearly one and a half million riders since October. For service details see www.amtrak.com.
