Dr. Scott Cooper is not only the current president of the Illinois State Medical Society, he is an emergency room physician.
“I'm all over something that's broken,” Cooper says, referring to a furnace problem at his house. “I had the thermocouple and could fix it at three in the morning. I probably wouldn't oil the motor and do the maintenance on it. I am into diagnosing acute conditions and trying to figure out why something is not working the way it should.”

“I realize that the collegiality that has been developed over these twenty years has paid off tremendously,” says Cooper, a Chicagoan who practices in Waukegan, “so when I call the surgeon at Lake County, the surgeon knows who I am, and it smooths the transition of the patient care.”
Cooper is talking to groups around the state. He's halfway through his year as president.
