Tonsillitis is one of the most common illnesses affecting children and teenagers and can cause a lot of pain and suffering.  Many children have tonsillitis at some point between the ages of five and fifteen years. Dr. Gayle Woodson, professor of otolaryngology at SIU School of Medicine says tonsillitis is an inflammation in the back of the throat. She describes some symptoms.

Woodson says tonsillitis can occur any time of year, but is most prevalent in the winter. It can be caused by a virus or bacteria, including strep throat.
