If you are one of the millions of people who have bought car insurance that meets the minimum requirements, you may be in for a rude awakening if you get in a crash that causes a large amount of property damage. The minimum amount of coverage legal in Illinois is 20-thousand dollars per person, 40-thousand dollars in bodily injury, and 15-thousand dollars for damage caused to another person's property.
That means if you cause a wreck that results in $100,000 in damage, you can be sued for the difference. Mark Terry with the Illinois Department of Insurance says don't believe the old adage "you can't get blood out of a turnip."
Terry says you should occasionally review all forms of coverage, whether it is car insurance, homeowner's inurance, renter's insurance, or any other type that you carry.
