Three people are dead after a crash on I-55 near Litchfield this morning. A car and van collided around 6:30am, after a mid 1990's model Chevrolet Impala either slowed or stopped on the highway. A witness says the lights on the car were either very dim or not working at all. One car swerved to miss the vehicle, but a van that was following did not, and struck the car, killing three and injuring another three people.
The accident happened in the northbound lanes near mile marker 60. Illinois State Police Trooper Jeff Yenchko says that's been a dangerous area of Interstate 55 in recent years:

An adult female and three kids were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, an adult male was airlifted to a Springfield hospital and two other children were taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis. The extent of their injuries are unknown. Police have not released the identity of the victims.
