Thomson prison soon will be run by the federal government, as state lawmakers are hammering out some of the final technicalities. State Sen. Mike Jacobs (D-East Moline) proposed a bill to give the federal government jurisdiction over the facility. “We’ve sold the prison. This simply just gives the federal government jurisdiction over their own facility,” Jacobs said.

The prison will be used as a maximum security prison. Jacobs made it clear that Illinois still has rights regarding the facility. “It [the bill] doesn’t take away any of our powers to do anything inside the facility ourselves, but it gives them authority in the institution,” Jacobs said. Thomson prison was sold to the federal government for $165 million.
