High temperatures at or above 90 degrees are back in the weather forecast for the next few days. It is the extended periods of oppressive heat that wear down your body, and the cumulative effect can be deadly in some cases. While not as hot as the extended run of triple-digit temperatures experienced last summer, our bodies have not had a chance to acclimate to some of the warmer temperatures of the season, and that has public health officials asking you to proceed with caution.
John Peipert, Director of Emergency Services at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton, says you need to pay attention to your body, don’t over do it, keep an eye on the elderly, and stay hydrated.
Local health officials urge the public to take precautions and check on elderly friends and neighbors. Health officials say as we age, we often do not sweat as much, and some people may not believe they are becoming overheated and decide not to run air conditioning.
