Police in St. Clair County are investigating whether or not a mother was texting while driving just before an accident that claimed the life of her 4 year old son. 29 year old Mindy Hoyt allegedly crossed the center line and struck another vehicle in the accident Wednesday in O'Fallon. Her son, 4 year old Diego Rangel, later died at a local hospital.

Authorities with the Sheriff's Department say witnesses have told them they saw Hoyt on her phone while she was driving and their initial investigation indicates a text was sent close to the time of the crash. No formal charges have been filed yet in the case, as Hoyt remains hospitalized in critical condition in St. Louis. The driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries, and a passenger refused treatment. Police also say the child was buckled into a booster seat, but because of his age should have been in a car seat.
