Texting while driving doesn’t get the same law enforcement attention as drunk driving – yet.  Pat O’Brien, director of safety programs for the Illinois Department of Transportation, says texting while driving is a growing problem.  “We’re seeing a rise in texting. We have a formal campaign to address texting while driving. This is something that we’re really gonna be looking to crack down on more and more as time goes on, because it is dangerous. You should pay full attention to the road while you’re driving,” he said.

Texting while driving has been illegal in Illinois since 2010, but it’s prevalent: Cops says there are many more texters than drunks behind the wheel.  O’Brien says it’ll take a shift in culture, as it did with drunk driving, to make texting unacceptable.
