If you routinely travel between Alton and East Alton and use Broadway to get back and forth, you will need to re-think your route soon. Beginning next Friday, July 27, westbound lanes will be closed intermittently through at least the end of the month, weather permitting, with full closures planned for that weekend, July 27-29.
IDOT Engineer Kirk Brown says the contractor doing the work will be reinstalling the flood gates and constructing new concrete abutments just east of the bridge carrying Illinois Route 3 over Wood River Creek.
This is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. The flood gates have not been used for a number of years, but were instrumental in helping contain the overflow from the Mississippi River that backed up into the Wood River Creek during the Flood of '93.
