A 17-year-old has been charged in the murder of another teen in Madison last Friday afternoon. Craig D. Miller of Lovejoy is accused of shooting 16-year-old Malik A. Garrett of Venice last Friday. Authorities say Garrett was found with three gunshot wounds to his chest in the parking lot of Smiley's Market. He later died at Gateway Regional Medical Center.
After looking at the evidence in the case, the Madison County State’s Attorney opted to charge Miller as an adult. He is officially charged with two counts of first degree murder and a count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and he faces up to 60 years in jail if he is found guilty. Authorities say there had been an ongoing dispute between Miller and Garrett and when Miller arrived on the scene, he fired several shots into a crowd, fatally wounding Garrett who was the only one hit. Miller is being held without bond.
