Federal authorities have now charged a teacher at Calhoun High School in connection with the bomb threat that cleared the school on Monday. The threat was discovered early Monday afternoon in the form of a computer generated note in a bathroom at the school in Hardin. 36-year-old Michelle L. Smith of Jerseyville was arrested Tuesday.
Smith is being held in federal custody without bond, charged with Conveying a False Threat. The federal charges carry a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Local authorities will often drop their charges once the Federal Government becomes involved in a case, but there has been no indication if that will be the case in this situation. Earlier in the day Thursday, the Calhoun County States Attorney charged Smith with Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat.
