The General Assistance program in Illinois is meant to help people who have fallen on hard times meet basic needs such as housing, utilities, food, clothing and medical care. The aid can be in cash, vouchers or medical assistance. In Godfrey, there has been an increase in open cases over the past year, and that may mean a higher tax bill for property owners in the future.
Godfrey Township Supervisor Doug Mueller says he believes church pastors from neighboring communities are advising people who need assistance that a low-budget motel that normally has rooms available is in Godfrey.

He says they normally only carry two or three people, but that number has more than doubled in recent months. As a result, Mueller says increasing the levy in the fall is a possibility.
