A bill introduced in the Illinois Senate would ban sunless tanning beds for those 17 and younger.   Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) is sponsoring the bill.  She says the light emitted from tanning beds is a Class 1 carcinogen.  “It’s a Class 1 carcinogen and we obviously protect our children from Class 1 carcinogens as we do with cigarette smoking,” Radogno said.

Under current state law, minors are allowed to use a sunless tanning bed with parental permission.  Some municipalities, like Springfield, have already implemented an outright ban for those under 18. The bill would not ban minors from “spray tanning.”
