The debate over who knows better what’s good for you is now applying to tanning beds for people under 18. “The concern here is the increase in melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer among our young adults,” said State Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston), sponsoring a ban on tanning bed use for those under 18.

“Epidemiological data suggests that most skin cancers can be prevented if children, teens, and adults are protected from UV radiation.” The Illinois House passed the tan ban over the objections of lawmakers such as State Rep. Mike Bost, who, with his wife, owns a beauty salon which used to have a tanning bed. “What we’re telling parents, once again, is ‘You don’t know how to be parents. We, as government, know better,’” he said. Bost said regulations discouraged him from keeping the bed in his shop. HB 188 passed the House, 67-49.
